Their Eyes Were Watching God

When I began reading this novel, I didn't think I was going to like it. As I read further I began to really like this novel. I really like Janie's character. I like how through the novel, we see how Janie grows as a person through her relationships. We know as readers that Janie had many relationships. Her marriage with Jody was dysfunctional and did not allow her to be the woman that she wanted to be. As the story continued, we see Janie sticking up for herself and believing in herself. I like when she says "Ah reckon ah looks mah age too. But Ah'm uh woman every inch of me, and at know it. Dat's uh whole lot more'n you kin say" (p 79). I like how Janie throws it right back and sticks up for herself and doesn't let anyone hold her back from her thoughts.

I thought that the relationship with Tea Cake might be questionable but as I read I can see that Tea Cake is the man that has brought the best out of Janie. He made her feel the way a woman should feel. Although he was still a manly man, he was able to let that manly guard down a little bit and show Janie that he cared and wanted to make her happy. He was willing to pick lemons to make lemonade, he was will to comb her hair and whip the dandruff off her shoulders, etc. He was willing to accept the good and bad (accept her for her.)

I enjoyed reading about the struggles Janie had trying to find out who she really is. Although she struggled and had to suppress her feelings, she was able to overcome those hard times. She found herself, which allowed her to be happy and live a life that was fulfilling.

I really liked, Janie's character. I loved how Hurston really showed how her main charcter grows in realationships. I felt that it something that we can all contribute to. Even through friend or family relationships we learn.

I thought that Tea Cake was a gold digger. I think he just tried extra hard in order to assure himself with her. His picking lemons was romantic, however, I feel as though he wanted more.

Janie, would be nothing without Jody. He made her who she was and set her up financially.Even though the relationship was bad, I felt as though she should have given respect for her husband. If only Hurston thre in a marriage counsler, what a novel that would be!

I too, was skeptical of Tea Cake when he first entered the novel. I questioned whether he was being genuine in his feelings for Janie. Luckily, Tea Cake turned out to be a good match for Janie. He accepted her for who she truly was and allowed her to find her confidence. Isn't that ultimately what every person wants out of a relationship. This is what I really liked about this novel. It dealt a lot with issues in relationships. Most people can relate to Janie's struggle to find the person that allowed her to have her own voice.

I really liked janie as a character i also liked tea ckae because he let janie be herself. i think that tea ckae brought out the good and strong part of janie that she did not show with her other husbands. He was questionably at first but turned out to be a good part in janie life. If it wasnt for tea ckae it hink that she wouldnt have ended up so strong in the end of the book.

I liked Tea Cake a lot more than Logan or Jody. Although Tea Cake did some questionable things he also have Janie confidence in herself (by flattering her and giving her freedom and treating her like a person - minus the beating thing). In the end she had strength and ultimately ruled over her life. She found a love that she wanted. I liked the way it all ended.

When I first started reading this novel, I was totally discouraged by the dialect used throughout the writing. I didn't think I was going to be able to get through it! Even though it wasn't as difficult as I thoguht, I still had to re-read sentences over until I realized just what she was trying to say!
I liked how Janie threw it back at Joe too; that shows her growth from the beginning of the novel which we were just waiting for!
I really liked the relationship between Janie and Tea Cake. I agree that he accepted her for who she was and allowed her to show off her beauty and her hair. I liked that we saw her struggles and growth through this novel. It was a really good novel to read.

I liked the Janies character. She was portrayed with such a strength. I think that every person that she was in conctact with gave left an imprint on her in which allowed her to become stronger and more independent.
